Adding Categories to Your New Magento Store

Now that you have Magento installed and working, we’ll want to set up at least one category to hold products.

As you can see from the following image, we have one empty category (Default Category).

The default category will be the top level category, which will hold all our store categories (as sub-categories) . Our first category, in my example, is Pantone Formula Guides & Chips. I select the default category and click on the Add Subcategory button to open an Add New Category Page.  I add the Pantone Formula Guides & Chips category, filling out all the necessary info, and continue on with the rest of the categories I will need for my finished store. When I am finally done, it will look like this finished category tree, with all the subcategories shown below the default category:

With all the categories added, the horizontal menu fills out to it’s finished state:
